Eyedea & Abilities - E&A

"Eyedea (real name: Micheal Larsen Born on November 9, 1982 – October 16, 2010) who also performed under the name Oliver Hartbecame widely known because of his battle and freestyle skills. Eyedea was best known for his victory at the Blaze Battle, which was aired on HBO, showing some of the best underground battlers in action. Eyedea originally toured with Slug, aka Sean Daley, and other people from Rhymesayers, a Minneapolis hip hop collective. He made the jump from a battle emcee with the release of his first album First Born by joining forces with DJ Abilities."

My Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Eyedea is the only rapper I've heard who can spit incredibly fast while still retaining an articulate and powerful voice. His rhymes are thought provoking, somewhat philosophical, and always raw as anything. Dude is nasty. Abilities, his DJ, is also an insane turntablist who's techniques work perfectly with Eyedea's fierce rapping. ILL.

teen idles

"The Teen Idles were pioneers of the DC Hardcore scene in the very early ’80s. Their only release was Dischord Records’ first. Ian MacKaye and Jeff Nelson went on to form Minor Threat, one of the most influential bands in all of punk rock and hardcore."

minor threat

"Minor Threat was an American band from Washington DC. Short-lived but very influential, critics have called the band and their work “iconic,” and have noted that their “groundbreaking” music “has held up better than most of their contemporaries.” Minor Threat is credited with unintentionally starting the ‘ movement'"

I really hope I didn't already post this...
Assuming that I didn't.. this is and will always be in my top 5 favorite albums of all time. The combination of Minor Threat, The Misfits, and the Bouncing Souls is what got me into the whole punk scene when I was like 12 or 13 years old. I cannot thank them enough for introducing me to what real music sounds like. THIS IS REAL DC PUNK MY FRIENDS!! At the time I was listening to blink 182 and good charlotte or some shit like that, Ian MacKaye knocked all the bullshit out of my confused little skull, parted the heavens, and forced godly rock into my soul. It was like reincarnation.

the 13th floor elevators

"Hailing from Austin, Texas, the members of 13th Floor Elevators were quite possibly the first artists to describe their music as psychedelic. Their lyrics and sleeve notes openly and religiously endorsed the use of drugs (particularly ) to alter human consciousness for the better."

My Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Roky Erickson is one lunatic of a god.

P.S. Janis Joplin was THIS CLOSE to joining these guys in the mid 60's, but she (obviously) decided to pursue a career of her own.

the airborne toxic event

"The Airborne Toxic Event is an alternative rock band that formed in Los Angeles, California, United States in 2006. The band consists of Mikel Jollett (vocals, guitar), Steven Chen (guitar, keyboards), Anna Bulbrook (viola, keyboards), Noah Harmon (bass) and Daren Taylor (drums). The band is best known for their single “Sometime Around Midnight”, which was a hit in the UK as well on American alternative radio in 2008 and 2009."

Just heard of these guys about a month ago. Really smart, really talented, and pretty damn original. The part I like most about this band is their lyricism. Their lyrics aren't especially poetic and sometimes they aren't even rhythmically on tempo with the instrumentation. However, they are very straightforward and very heartfelt. The singer portrays some images that are pretty universal and accessible for most people. Whether he is talking about teenage angst, nostalgia, or just plain old boredom, this guy knows how to speak his mind.
