at the gates

"At The Gates is a band from Gothenburg, Sweden.

Originally formed in 1990 after
Grotesque broke up, the band played a very original and unique style of which can be found on the earlier releases, while their later releases were more melodic and the structures of the songs were less complex. After releasing The Red in the Sky Is Ours in 1992, main songwriter and guitarist Alf Svensson left the band because of his loss of interest on the project. One year later, With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness was released. Still, most of the guitar riffs were written by Alf Svensson. After the release of Terminal Spirit Disease, last album to include some riffs written by Alf Svensson, At the Gates decided to cut all the innovative, unique, technical aspects of their earlier material, focusing on writing catchier, less intricate songs for Slaughter of the Soul, released in 1995. This album, ironically, became arguably their most popular and influential work, especially in the scene, influencing acts such as Darkest Hour, The Black Dahlia Murder, and Himsa. At the Gates are considered one of the pioneering bands which includes bands such as In Flames, Dark Tranquility, Hypocrisy andSoilwork among others.

Alf Svensson formed
Oxiplegatz after At the Gates released With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness with unused material he had written for At the Gates. When At the Gates broke up in 1996, drummer Adrian Erlandsson, bassist Jonas Björler and guitarist Anders Björler formed The Haunted while vocalist Tomas Lindberg bounced around between many groups including Skitsystem, Disfear, The Crown, Lock-Up, Nightrage and The Great Deceiver. Adrian Erlandsson left The Haunted to join UK gothic metal outfit Cradle of Filth later on.

In October 2007 the band announced that they will be reuniting for selected festivals in 2008."

My Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

If you are only going to download one album out of all the death metal records on my blog, let it be this one. This record is insane.

A lot of people look down on this album and call it the band's "sellout album." I disagree, the band just developed into a new style, I hate when people pull that shit and say the band sold out.

BUT ANYWAY

download "The Red Sky Is Ours" (1992) if you downloaded "Slaughter Of The Soul" and liked it.
